The short answer is, yes, you do! People ask me all of the time what is it that I do that warrants them spending the money (investment) for my work. The list of what makes a professional headshot great is long but let's start with the basic six components that a professional headshot photographer performs.

Speaking for myself, the very first thing I do is listen. I listen to what my client is looking for in terms of a 'look'. I always follow up with the question of, how are you going to use this/these headshots. Most of the time people use their headshots for either social media or for publication. From there, I discuss what kind of background they require, what kind of clothing they will be wearing, how many outfits they would like to be photographed in, and of course the big topic of having professional makeup applied. Before you even ask the question do men need professional makeup, the answer is yes! Everyone does! It's always advised to have your face professionally ready for the camera! But, that's another discussion/blog topic!

The second most important item of what a professional headshot photographer offers that your phone camera doesn't is lighting! In a typical headshot session I use about four different lights, reflectors, and side panels to the set that either reflect or absorb light. I could go further into this topic as well, but let's just say, lighting is what makes a headshot great or horrible.

The third thing I do with my clients is get them comfortable in front of the camera. Unlike a phone camera where you just point and shoot, I ease my clients into the process by playing their favorite music, take practice shots, and just get them comfortable sitting on the stool.

The fourth technique I employ during a headshot photoshoot is showing my client his/her shots on my camera as I start shooting so they can see for themselves how good they look! You can't believe how calming this step is in the headshot process. Once someone sees themself looking great, they gain the confidence to keep going with being photographed. Posture is a big deal and as my client is adjusting to the photo set, lights, and being in front of the camera, I coach them on their posture and that includes head, shoulders, and arms. From there, I have my client change position from left to right. Why? Every person has their 'better' side! Yes, it's true.

Next to last, the fifth reason why having a professional headshot photographer do your headshot matters, is getting your personality to come through the camera! If I can't get your personality to shine through in a genuinely joyous way, how is this headshot going to convey to your audience that you're 'user friendly'?

GaryGary Last, but one of the most important reasons why a professional headshot photographer is the way to go for your next new headshot is all about the professional editing they perform to get the perfect final headshot image. When I perform the headshot editing, I use a professional proprietary portrait software that assists with skin smoothing, diminishing blemishes, removing pimples, whitening eyes, cleaning & whitening teeth, remove highlights to skin and head, applying makeup if required, adding color to lips, and fixing any clothing issues that might show up. The background is also edited as well as the cropping of the client into the appropriate size format.

Does this sound like a lot of work to you? It is! And, that's what goes into making a great headshot!

Finding My Photography Roots https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2021/8/finding-my-photography-roots Finding my photography roots, the passions I thought I left behind in Singapore resurfaced at my future daughter-in-law's family reunion this past month.

Here I am meeting this wonderful family for the first time and what am I doing? I'm documenting its oldest member Grandpa John with my camera.

I became very aware and passionate about capturing the very essence of an older generation while living abroad. Looking at older people of another culture, it became obvious to me that the style of clothing, jewelry, hairstyle, and accessories would no longer exist when they are gone.

Grandpa John is 92 years old. What greater gift of thanks can I give this family for welcoming me into the fold? I can give them a beautiful candid photo of their Dad and Grandpa because it truly was taken with passion.

Honoring what made me fall in love with being a professional photographer reminded me of how important it is to be passionate about something and act on it!

Life is short. Be passionate and pay it forward to others!

Halloween Doggie Parade https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/11/halloween-doggie-parade I attended my first Halloween Dog Parade this past weekend. It's been the best therapy for COVID-19 & pre-election tension! My parade favorite pic is Benji The Dog Jockey! Working with dogs is like trying to nail Jello to a wall! To get a successful shot, the pet owner has to participate in getting the dog to pose. Don't even think as a photographer you're going to be able to juggle getting the dog to pose on your own. You're not! The winning shot will either be totally candid or be one of many that are collaborative. Either way, it's a lot of fun!

7 Holiday Photo Tips https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/10/holiday-photo-tips Yes, it's that time of year to start thinking about Holiday Photos 2020!

Even though holiday celebrations may look a lot different this year, the tradition of taking a holiday family photo continues and will likely take on even more importance.

Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography offers the following 7 tips for taking stunning holiday photos:

“Matchy-matchy” is a good thing. Coordinate outfits color-wise. For example, if one person is wearing red plaid, make sure other family members are also wearing red or a complimentary color. Avoid wearing metallic. Solid colors such as white, red, green, gold, and black are best. In groups of four, only one person should be wearing plaid or a pattern. And yes, coordinating pajamas work just fine. Don’t be afraid to incorporate textures by wearing a shearling jacket or polar fleece.

When it comes to lighting, avoid the sun and flames.  If you’re outdoors, don’t shoot into the sun as it washes out the photo. Campfire shots are not recommended as it’s difficult to frame people around a fire, plus there’s a lot of smoke, and the glow effects lighting. If you’re indoors, use a flash to avoid a yellow tinge and shadows in your photo. Also, leave any lit candles or lamps out of your holiday shot.

Backdrop is key. Simplicity is key when it comes to the backdrop. Limit what’s behind you. Multicolored lights on a Christmas tree in the background works well as the lights will fade out. Another great backdrop example is the side of a barn at a Christmas tree farm. Or, just the trees in the background (check your viewfinder to ensure it doesn’t appear as if branches are coming out of the top of someone’s head). If you wanted to get more elaborate, consider the tree backdrop with everyone seated on the tailgate of a red pick-up truck.

Frame it just right. Mind the spacing between family members as they often stand or sit too far apart. Remember to leave enough space above people’s heads in the photo too. Otherwise, when the photo is framed, it cuts across the tops of heads. If you’re indoors, keep it simple and take a tight shot. No need to show the entire home in the photo. Again, be aware of any background items that make it appear too busy or as if the item is part of someone’s shoulder.

The pose. Try to avoid the stiff “superposed” portrait of yesteryear. If a large family is gathered, make sure that everyone is looking at the camera. Mind all hand, arm, and leg positioning. Raising an arm or waving is not only distracting, it may block another’s face in the photo. In a photo with five or fewer – hugging, holding hands, and engaging with one another appears natural.

Simple props. The family photo can be fun and celebrate the season with some very simple props. The easiest prop is clothing such as scarves, hats, and mittens. Other tasteful props include a nostalgic wooden sled, ice skates tied together and dangling over a shoulder, someone holding skis up, or ski poles (pointed down).

Costumes and mischief. A holiday photo really serves as a memory and marks a special moment. You may want to refrain from “cheesy” photos of pets adorned with holiday lights, or dad wearing a Grinch costume or play-fighting with those ski-pole props mentioned above.

“There’s quite a bit that goes into creating an amazing, yet natural holiday photo,” explained Debi Cramer, founder and principle photographer at Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography. Cramer should know, having spent many years photographing people, places, and things all over the world. With a background in fine arts, textile, and graphic design, Cramer shoots with a designer’s eye, which produces stunning images that are highly marketable. Her international travels, study abroad experience in Edinburgh, Scotland as well as living in Singapore span more than two decades.

Holiday Front Porch Photo

Cramer continued, “Front porch photos with decorative hints, using the gentle approach of clothing colors and textures, brings the holiday into the photo. For those who would like a professional photo for the holidays, Thirty-Eighth Avenue Photography is offering an on-location option and capturing holiday front porch moments.”

Black & White Photos Are Timeless https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/7/black-white-photos-are-timeless Candid black & white photos of kids playing on the beach at sunset are timeless. They are soothing to look at. There is a romantic feeling to them as well. Over the years I've looked at my old family B & W photos and noticed all the details in them. Maybe it's because looking at color photos emphasize color more than the details of the objects in them.

In this shot, my eye is drawn to the sun shining on the beach rocks and pebbles. I notice the ocean water on the surface of the wet sand. The action of Mom looking at what the boys are doing while she is walking towards them, the boy crouching while scooping wet sand along with the incoming waves crashing as they hit the shore, and the beautiful geometric line the people in this image create, additionally adds motion to the photo.

Having a good amount of bokeh (out-of-focus) in the background in this shot is important because it emphasizes and defines the subject (Mom & boys) with clarity. Softening the waves and land in the background gives this image a very nostalgic feeling...timeless! There is something to be said for simplicity.

Magnolia Blooms https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/5/magnolia-blooms In my book, looking at a Magnolia Tree in full bloom is a religious experience! Not every year yields plentiful pink and white, with a tinge of purple-colored Duxbury MagnoliaDuxbury Magnolia magnolia blooms. These trees are sensitive to climate. Some years are better than others. In my opinion, the most dramatic Magnolia Trees to look at when they are in full bloom are the older ones. Their graceful blooms last for about a couple of weeks and then start to drop. The window of time to photograph Magnolia Trees at their peak is limited and especially in New England where Mother Nature can turn on a dime with some nasty cold, windy and rainy weather. Driving around last week on the South Shore, I knew my time limit was nearly up if I wanted to capture the beauty of Magnolia Tree blossoms. I lucked out. Set in the front yard of the Winsor House Inn on Washington Street in Duxbury, MA is a gigantic old Magnolia Tree! It was in its last moment of glory when I snapped away taking images of its magnificent blossoms. I felt so lucky, excited, and content as I was capturing its beauty. The feeling of contentment came from years and years of always wanting to see a Magnolia Tree heavily laden with flower blossoms and photograph it but not being able to. Here on the South Shore, the climate is just temperate enough for these flowering trees to thrive and I feel so lucky to have finally been able to photograph one of my favorite trees in full bloom! And as the saying goes, good things come to those that wait!

Floating Oyster Shacks https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/5/floating-oyster-shacks Slowly but surely I'm becoming a New Englander. It's a slow process (even though collectively I've spent a couple of decades living in New England). There are a lot of subtleties. Each location has its uniqueness. Today I learned that the floating shacks in Duxbury Harbor are used by oystermen. The main clue was one floating shack that actually had an oyster trap laying on its deck. Okay, I'll be honest, I had to Google it! There is something kind of comical about looking at all of the fairly new floating shacks that have solar panels on their roofs, garage doors, and wooden carved nameplates if you don't know what you're looking at. Now that I know what they are, all I can't think of is eating freshly harvested Duxbury oysters on the half shell!

Best Donuts Evah https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/4/best-doughnuts-evah It's not like I'm in search of the perfect donut but...I just happened to have stumbled upon the most orgasmic donut experience of my life yesterday while driving around (in safe Coronavirus isolation) Middletown, Rhode Island on a gray skied windy day. I got the hot tip about Ma's Donuts and More from a friend who lives in Rhode Island. It was the perfect pit stop on my way to Newport to do a photography reconnaissance. Only allowing one patron inside the shop at a time (wearing a face mask), I had the whole place to myself. Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever had an entire donut shop that makes handmade yeast and cake donuts in every classic variety all to yourself, to choose without being influenced by friends or family as to which one to buy? Yeah, I didn't think so! Well, I picked these amazing classics to share (again according to CDC guidelines) and let me tell you they are the perfect donuts. The yeast donuts were fluffy yet just chewy enough. The cake donuts had that perfect density with just the right amount of inside moisture and outside crunch. The jelly-filled donuts were filled with dense berry jelly that didn't run and goo out all over your hands. I'm currently in a donut coma! And, since I'm having to be socially isolated, restaurant deprived, indulging in the very best donuts once during this incredibly difficult time is totally okay!

P.S. Ma's Donuts and More has a drive-thru too!

Waiting For Summer https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/4/waiting-for-summer Reality - going to the ocean frequently and checking out the waterfront is what is keeping myself and others sane during the COVID-19 outbreak here in Plymouth. Today's waterfront scene took me totally by surprise with the tropical turquoise ocean colors, the prettiest blue sky complete with white poofy clouds, and Long Beach's sand dunes with trees as a backdrop! Of course, I'm still waiting to see the sailboats and motorboats return to their empty slips at the marina. In the meantime, I will enjoy looking at this image knowing the wait won't be too much more. I hope this image brings peace and comfort to you too!

Duck Comedy https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/3/duck-comedy Spring for me is the most exciting time of year to be outdoors. Usually, it's the burst of yellow from Forsythia bushes, along with the hits of yellows, whites, purples, and pinks from bulbs emerging from the ground with their much-welcomed fowers that makes me smile and erase my winter blues. But, just last week I had a Spring first! Hanging out at the Plymouth State Pier in Plymouth, MA harbor I spotted some black & white ducks. I had never seen these before so I looked them up and found out they are called  Bufflehead Kerfuffle ducks! Great name. These ducks were very entertaining performing their annual mating ritual of two male ducks chasing one female duck around and around! Truthfully, watching these Bufflehead Kerfuffles come in for water landings was hysterically funny as they used their outstretched legs along with their webbed feet in front of them as break pedals while their bodies were totally vertical. Now I've seen lots of ducks in my time take off and land in the water, but these guys were totally different and quite comical. Hard to hold a camera and giggle at the same time!

Tropical Plant Names & Cocktails https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/3/tropical-plant-names-cocktails I have to be honest with you, researching the names of tropical plants can be very entertaining because some of them are named after tropical bar drinks! Of course, each plant has its Latin scientific name but that's NOT entertaining. I won't remember all of the Latin names to all of the flowers and plants I photograph. But, I MOST definitely will remember the names of the plants in this photograph because I usually either eat the fruit or drink the tropical drink they are named after! To end the suspense, the big leafed turquoise green plant with the purple-red stalk is referred to as an Ornamental Banana! I eat bananas. The lower situated variegated bright green plant is referred to as a Mojito Elephant Ear. Considering my favorite warm-weather drink is a Mojito I will never forget the name of this plant! And who thought plant identifying was boring! Cheers!

Sea of Cranberries https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/10/sea-of-cranberries Timing is everything when trying to find a flooded cranberry bog!

I waited for a few days for the rainy weather to clear out so I could jump into my car on a crisp clear blue sky Fall day to see if I could find a local flooded cranberry bog to shoot. Within 15 minutes en route, one of the biggest cranberry growers in Carver, MA were harvesting a flooded bog. They were about 50 percent finished with harvesting the cranberries which provided me with unexpected photo ops! Having open water, swirls of pink and red cranberries floating on the surface of the flooded bog, cranberries and bog harvest debris such as leaves, grass, flowers, and twigs to shoot was way more than what I expected to shoot. The unexpected is what I love about heading out into nature. I'm never disappointed because there is beauty in every natural situation.

What I love about this shot is how I shot the different colored cranberries floating on the surface from an eye-level perspective, giving the cranberries an almost candy quality...like white, pink and red M&M's. While you are here, check out my other cranberry harvest shots!

The way I love to spend my birthday is being outdoors shooting nature. This October I chose to go to an apple orchard in Harvard, Massachusetts to try and capture the beauty of fresh apples on the tree. After a week of rain, the sky was a beautiful blue that made it so inviting to look up through the apple trees and approach capturing the beauty of these red apples in a unique way. I love the perspective of this apple tree branch!

Cranberry Time In New England https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/9/cranberry-time-in-new-england With the cooling New England temperatures these days, cranberries growing on the vine are turning their beautiful shades of crimson red. I had the pleasure of visiting a few different cranberry bogs in Carver, MA this past weekend. The skies were overcast with white puffy clouds and once in a while, the afternoon sun would peak out. It was perfect light to photograph cranberries! It took me a while to shoot these little red berries from different angles. Being outdoors for hours in this peaceful setting with no one around but the pine tree outlined bogs surrounding me for quite some distance was food for the soul!

There aren't enough words to describe how joyous I am feeling right now. The beauty of the soft pale pink roses combined with the magnificence of the purple stock and budded pink alstroemeria leaves me speechless. A Visit With Luna https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/12/a-visit-with-luna This past weekend I met my first Granddog. Her name is Luna. She's a 5 1/2-month-old Black & White Springer Spaniel. It was love at first sight. Or, should I say it was love at first-hand nibble! Luna has tons of energy. I suppose that is to be expected for a Springer Spaniel. She has the sweetest disposition and clearly loves her human family. Trying to take a photo of this delightful puppy was hilarious considering she never sits still for a minute! I know there will be more photo ops to come, so stay tuned for more Luna pics!

Autumn's Colors https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/11/autumns-colors Every year when the trees start turning colors, I look to see if this season's colors are brilliant or muted. The quest to find bright reds seems to be an annual tradition for me. This year's peak week for leaf peepers in the Northeast came later than usual. When I finally gave up hope of peeping some bright Fall leaf colors last week, the joke was on me! Outside in the crisp Northeast afternoon, the sun was shining and the leaves were brightly colored! It was a fast run for my camera gear and out the door, I went in hopes of capturing some wicked good shots! I hope you enjoy my favorite image of fall lily pond leaves with beautiful water reflections of the pine trees nearby.  The vividness of the pinks, blues, and greens spoke to my soul! And now I can stop complaining about this year's Fall colors!  Pond ReflectionsPond Reflections

Leaving My Comfort Zone https://38thavenuephotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/8/whats-not-to-love-about-photographing-dogs Of course, holding my new camera with a new lens mounted to it gave me this insane rush to start shooting immediately today. Running out of the house, scoping out my property for some new botanicals to shoot, I realized there really wasn't anything of interest that caught my eye until...I spotted my canine girlfriend Coco! It took me a few minutes to think about setting, expression, and whether or not I could capture Coco's sweet and easy-going personality. I have to admit, she made it easy for me! Stepping out of my comfort zone today with my doggie photo shoot turned out to be a lot of fun, produced a few great photos and gave me a new subject area of photography to pursue. Do you have a dog?
